When Life Gets Hard, God Gets Closer

There are seasons in life that nobody prepares you for.
Seasons where the weight of worry, loss, uncertainty, or pain presses against your chest and makes it hard to breathe. Seasons where you pray and the silence feels louder than your faith. Seasons where you look around at everything falling apart and wonder — quietly, honestly — if God has forgotten your name.
He has not.
And today, I want to sit with you in that hard place for a moment — not to give you a list of things to do, but to remind you of a truth that has held God's people together for thousands of years.
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you." — Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV
The Context Behind the Courage
These words were not spoken in a comfortable room to comfortable people. Moses spoke them to an entire nation standing on the edge of the unknown — a people preparing to enter a land filled with giants, opposition, and every reason to turn back.
They had wandered for forty years. They had buried loved ones in the wilderness. They were tired, uncertain, and afraid.
And God did not say "figure it out." He did not say "be careful." He did not hand them a strategy and wish them well.
He said — I am going with you.
That changes everything. Not the giants. Not the opposition. Not the wilderness. The presence of God walking into the hard place with you is what transforms impossible into possible, fear into faith, and mourning into movement.
That same word is for you today.
You Are Not Alone in This
Whatever giant you are facing right now — whatever valley you are walking through, whatever door has closed or dream has been delayed or diagnosis has been delivered — God is not watching from a distance. He is not a spectator in your suffering. He goes before you, He walks beside you, and when you are too weary to take another step, He carries you.
He will never leave you. He will never forsake you. That is not a motivational phrase — that is a covenant promise from the mouth of God Himself, and He has never broken a promise.
The hard season you are in right now is not the end of your story. It is the very place where God is writing some of the most powerful chapters of your life.
Practical Ways to Anchor Yourself This Week
Knowing God is faithful and feeling it in the middle of a storm are two very different things. Here are five practical ways to anchor yourself in His faithfulness this week when the waves feel high.
Pray for courage daily. Do not wait until you feel brave to move forward. Ask God specifically to help you face your fears and give you strength for today. Courage is not the absence of fear — it is choosing to trust God in the presence of it. Start each morning with a simple prayer: Lord, give me the courage to take the next step.
Journal about His faithfulness. Take time to write about moments when God has shown up in your life. Think back on the prayers He answered, the doors He opened, the times He carried you through what you thought would break you. Remembrance is a weapon against fear. When you remember what God has done, you find the strength to trust what He is still doing.
Memorize Deuteronomy 31:6. Write it on a sticky note. Set it as your phone wallpaper. Speak it out loud in the moments when anxiety tries to take over. The Word of God in your mouth is a sword — use it. Recite it when fear rises. Recite it until it becomes the loudest voice in the room.
Encourage someone else this week. There is someone in your life right now who needs to hear that they are not alone. A text, a call, a handwritten note — small acts of encouragement carry the weight of eternity. When you pour into others, God pours back into you.
Write down three more of His promises. Lean on scriptures that remind you of God's faithfulness. Here are a few to anchor you:
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." — Psalm 23:1
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." — Jeremiah 29:11
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." — Romans 8:28
Post them where you can see them every single day and let His Word be the anchor your soul keeps returning to.
A Reminder
God's faithfulness is your foundation in hard times. Not your strength. Not your strategy. Not your network or your resources. His faithfulness. And that foundation does not crack under pressure, does not shift in the storm, and does not crumble when everything around you feels like it is falling apart.
Trust in Him. Lean into His promises. Stay faithful. Stay courageous.
He is with you — and that is enough.
To God be all the glory — now and forever. Amen.
